Knoxville Police Department officers are investigating a fatal single-car crash that happened late last night on I-40 East.

At around 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2024, KPD officers were dispatched to a crash in the eastbound lanes of I-40 between Midway Road and Strawberry Plains Pike. Officers arrived on scene, finding a car that had rolled over, possibly after crossing the median from the westbound lanes.

The driver, a 26-year-old man, had been ejected from the vehicle and struck by tractor trailer that was no longer on scene. The passenger, also an adult man, was transported to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The crash is being investigated by KPD fatal accident investigators. The identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
