Man Charged with Multiple Felonies After Brief Crime Spree

21-year-old Isaiah Shuman was arrested and charged with multiple felonies following a brief crime spree that happened in the early hours of Friday morning.

At around 2:15 a.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to the parking lot behind the Half Barrel at 1831 Cumberland Avenue. It was reported that Shuman was told to leave the bar and threatened to kill an employee. Shuman left the scene in a white Dodge Challenger, fired a gunshot in an unknown direction and speed away from the parking lot, striking two parked vehicles in the process.

A 21-year-old woman was in the car with Shuman, and allegedly told Shuman that she wanted out of the car, but he refused to let her exit the car.

A short time later, Shuman’s car was speeding on 17th Street in the direction of Western Avenue spotted by a UT Police Department officer. The responding UTPD officer then found Shuman’s car crashed into another vehicle as well as a retaining wall.

Shuman ran from the scene of that crash and then reportedly forced his way into a home in the 700 block of Alfredda Delaney Street. Three people were inside the home at the time of that incident. Shuman took a phone from the home and then ran out the back door.

After running from the home, Shuman was located by responding UTPD officers, who took him into custody following a brief foot pursuit.

Shuman was taken into custody on a litany of charges, including four counts of aggravated kidnapping, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident, and one count of aggravated assault, aggravated burglary and reckless endangerment.

Shuman was taken to the UT Medical Center for evaluation due to his involvement in a motor vehicle crash. The victim who was in the car with Shuman at the time of the crash on 17th Street was also taken to the UTMC for medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
