Traffic Fatalities in 2024

Fifty-two people died in traffic crashes in Knoxville in 2024, a 14-percent increase from 2023, when 45 people were killed in crashes.

“2024 was a difficult year on Knoxville roads and illustrates why we prioritize roadway safety and traffic enforcement,” Chief of Police Paul Noel said. “We will continue to work hard alongside of our law enforcement partners to slow people down and prevent the behaviors that lead to these tragic outcomes. We also urge drivers to do their part to keep the roads as safe as possible.”

“It breaks my heart to see these numbers and to know so many families are grappling with losing a loved one because of senseless accidents on our roadways,” said Mayor Indya Kincannon. “With our Vision Zero initiative, the work of KPD, and more responsible driving, I know we can bring these numbers down.”

Of the 52 traffic fatalities that happened in 2024, 12 were riding motorcycles, while another 11 were pedestrians. Additionally, one bicyclist was killed in a traffic crash.

There were five multi-fatality crashes, included two triple fatalities and three double fatalities.

Sixteen of the 45 crashes that resulted in at least one fatality happened on the interstate. Those 16 crashes led to 20 total fatalities. Four fatal crashes happened on Western Avenue, while at least two fatal crashes occurred on multiple streets, including Chapman Highway, Middlebrook Pike, Martin Mill Pike, Asheville Highway and Magnolia Avenue.

The primary factors that contributed to the fatal crashes in 2024 were excessive speed, lack of a seatbelt and intoxication. Secondarily, a general lack of attentiveness likely contributed to numerous traffic fatalities.
