Zachary Newton, 35, has been indicted for Second-Degree Murder following a Knoxville Police Department-led Drug Related Death Task Force investigation into an overdose death.
A Knox County Grand Jury indicted Newton for second-degree murder, sale and delivery of fentanyl and cocaine, and tampering with evidence after the overdose death of a 31-year-old woman at an apartment on Asheville Highway in July of 2024.
The investigation revealed Newton was involved in a relationship with the victim and had supplied her with the drugs that ultimately caused her death.
Newton was located and taken into custody at a rehab facility on Kim Watt Drive on Monday, June 9.
Unrelated to the overdose death, in January, Newton was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after KPD officers responded to a domestic altercation involving a different woman at Newton’s Compton Street home.
A subsequent search warrant executed at his residence then led to the discovery of numerous narcotics, including over 50 grams of methamphetamine and over 10 grams of fentanyl and five firearms.
Additional charges are expected as OCU detectives continue their investigation.
