Update on Deadly McCalla Avenue Shooting

UPDATE (Monday, February 19, 3:45 p.m.): Following continued investigation, KPD Homicide Unit detectives have obtained warrants charging James Perry III, 40, with voluntary manslaughter and weapon offenses in connection to the February 14, 2024 shooting death of Sherwin Harris, 50, on McCalla Avenue. At this time, efforts remain ongoing to locate Perry. Anyone with information concerning his whereabouts is urged to contact East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers at 865-215-7165. The victim of the deadly shooting that happened on February 14, 2024 on McCalla Avenue has been identified as Sherwin Harris, 50.

Based on the preliminary findings of the investigation that is being led by the Knoxville Police Department Homicide Unit, it is believed that the following occurred. The victim and suspect were allegedly involved in an altercation at the Magnolia Café earlier in the night. That confrontation continued at the lounge located at 2223 McCalla Avenue. At some point during that altercation, the suspect shot the victim and left the scene prior to officer arrival.

Detectives have identified a possible person of interest.

Detectives are also seeking information from anybody who witnessed the shooting or were in the lounge when it occurred. Information can be submitted anonymously via East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers at www.easttnvalleycrimestoppers.org or 865-215-7165.
