TBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting at West Knoxville Home

UPDATE: The Knoxville Police Department has identified the involved officers from the police shooting that happened on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at a home on Santala Drive as Hunter Powers and Cayden Riddle. Both Powers and Riddle graduated from the KPD training academy in February 2023 and are assigned to West District Field Operations. Per standard protocol, Officers Powers and Riddle have been placed on routine, administrative leave.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened at a West Knoxville home early Saturday morning.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the following occurred.

At around 7:40 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024, two Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a reported domestic situation involving a man armed with a gun at a home in the 4700 block of Santala Drive. The officers arrived at the scene at around 7:50 a.m.

Officers entered the home and announced themselves as KPD officers. Seconds later, they encountered a man armed with a handgun, who then shot a woman who was inside of the home. Officers fired in response, striking the man at least one time. Officers immediately requested medical assistance.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was transported to the UT Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the face. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Per standard protocol, the TBI will lead the investigation.

The involved officers have been placed on routine administrative leave, and the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an internal administrative investigation.
