While serving our city, KPD strives to build community partnerships between officers, neighbors and organizations throughout Knoxville. One of those organizations is CareCuts of Knoxville.

Officer Hayden Proffitt and CareCuts founder Marti Baker have developed a friendship while serving the community. When CareCuts was burglarized, that connection made all the difference.

KPD’s Cadet Program began in 1992. It’s an alternative for people with interest in law enforcement who are not yet old enough for the Police Academy.

Four officers from the inaugural Cadet Program still work at KPD today.

After Hurricane Helene carved a path of destruction through upper East Tennessee, multiple KPD officers deployed to both Carter County and Washington County to assist in water rescues and search and recovery efforts.

Meet Knoxville Police Department Family Services Advocate Sharon Hajko. 

From July 15-18, 2024, 10 Knoxville Police Department officers were deployed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in response to a nationwide mutual aid request for assistance. Those officers were there for the duration of the RNC, conducting bike patrols as part of a larger law enforcement effort to ensure the safety of the event.

The Safety Building at 800 Howard Baker Jr. Avenue served as Knoxville Police Department headquarters for nearly 60 years.

In June, the KPD officially moved out of the Safety Building and into the new Public Safety Complex. In conjunction with that move, current and former members of the KPD talked about what the Safety Building meant to them both personally and professionally.

On March 19, 2023, Officer Luis Sanchez encountered a woman who is experiencing homelessness. After the woman said that she was cold and needed a coat, Officer Sanchez left, bought her a coat and took it back to her.

On March 29, Officer Ayotte was patrolling his area when he found two children’s bicycles that were being thrown away. Officer Ayotte asked the homeowner if he could have the bikes instead. After getting minor repairs done to one of the bikes, he, along with Officer Walton and Officer Zirges took the bikes and gave them to a group of kids. Officer Ayotte also handed out stickers and let the kids try on his vest and helmet!

On February 9, 2022, KPD Officer Nick Adams arrived at the scene of a crash. The driver was trapped inside of the truck, which was burning. Officer Adams acted quickly to help the man escape from the truck before it became fully engulfed in flames. 

In December 2021, Knoxville area first responders showed their support for the kids at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital by shining their lights.
