The Knoxville Police Department is investigating two different and unrelated fatal crashes that happened on Thursday morning.

At around 3:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, KPD officers were dispatched to a single-car crash on I-40 West near Strawberry Plains Pike. The driver, an adult woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, an adult man, sustained only minor injuries and was transported to the UT Medical Center for evaluation.

The investigation revealed that the vehicle, a Toyota Camry, was traveling west on I-40 when it drove off the road and crashed into the wood line for reasons that remain under investigation. Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time pending next of kin notification.

A little over three hours later, at around 6:30 a.m., KPD officers were dispatched to two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Western Avenue at Matlock Drive. The motorcyclist, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation into that crash determined that the motorcycle was traveling on Western Avenue when a sedan pulled out from Matlock Drive and into the path of the motorcycle.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in that crash, and no charges have been filed at this time.

The identity of the deceased is also being withheld pending next of kin notifications.

Both crashes remain under active investigation by KPD crash reconstruction personnel.
