Tyler Maffett, 18 of Knoxville, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following a detailed investigation into a shooting that happened on Tuesday night.

At around 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, KPD officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from a woman who reported that her boyfriend had been shot and she was transporting him to the UT Medical Center. The gunshot victim, a 19-year-old man from Alcoa, Tennessee, had sustained one gunshot wound to the upper body and was treated for suspected non-life-threatening injuries.

Responding officers and detectives learned that the shooting occurred in the 1000 block of James Avenue. The victim alleged that he and his girlfriend were transporting the male suspect when he shot the victim during an attempted robbery.

Persistent investigation led by KPD Homicide Unit detectives throughout the day on Wednesday resulted in the identification of Maffett as the suspect. Maffett was subsequently charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a felony and one count of especially aggravated robbery.

Maffett was taken into custody on Wednesday night by Community Engagement Response Team officers at the Seigel Select on Clyde Street.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing at this time.
